Since a normal 'emo/scene' cut is a flat front and a somewhat spiked back, just wet your hair and put a dime-sized amount of putty into your hands and rub it, distributing evenly throughout your hair. Then go back through and take it to the angle you want it (spikey top, spikey back, out of bed look..etcetc)
